A driveway gate that stops halfway, hums without moving, or ignores the remote entirely is annoying in a way a stuck garage door is not — you are usually sitting in the car, in the rain, blocking your own driveway. Before you call anyone, five checks solve a good share of gate faults.
Most swing and slide operators run off a battery that a transformer or a solar panel keeps charged. The gate does not stop dead when that battery weakens — it slows, struggles on the last few feet, or opens but will not close. Check the breaker and any GFCI outlet feeding the transformer first, because a tripped outlet at the house is the single most common cause we find.
Gates have the same safety sensors a garage door does, and they fail the same way: knocked out of alignment by a mower, fogged, or blocked by a spider web that built up overnight. Wipe both lenses and look for the steady indicator light on each. If one blinks, nudge it until it stops.
Walk the gate's path. Slide gates collect sand, mulch and stones in the track; swing gates sag on a worn hinge until the leading edge scrapes the driveway. A gate that drags pulls more current, and a healthy operator will stop rather than force it. Clearing the track is often the whole repair.
If one remote works and another does not, it is a battery. If nothing works but the wall button does, the receiver may have lost its programming — common after a lightning season surge. Keypad codes live on the operator board, not in the keypad, so a board that took a hit forgets every code at once.
Every operator has a release — a key, a lever, or a pull — that disengages the motor so you can move the gate by hand. Use it to get out, then leave the gate disengaged until it has been looked at rather than cycling it repeatedly. Forcing a powered gate against an obstruction is how a cheap repair turns into a new operator.
