Your garage door is the largest single opening in the house. In a Gulf storm that matters more than anything else on the exterior: if the door buckles, the pressure that rushes in has to go somewhere, and where it usually goes is up, against the roof deck. That is why Florida treats garage doors as structural rather than decorative.
Under the Florida Building Code, a replacement garage door in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Manatee or Sarasota County has to meet the wind-load requirement for your address, and the installation is permitted and inspected. The rating is expressed as a design pressure — a positive and negative number the door assembly is tested to withstand. The right number depends on where the house sits, how exposed it is, and how tall it is, so it is not a single figure that applies county-wide.
A compliant door carries a label on the inside of a panel listing its manufacturer, model and approval number — either a Florida Product Approval or a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance. If you cannot find a label, assume the door is not rated.
Vertical brace kits that bolt across the door before a storm are better than nothing on an older door, and plenty of Tampa Bay homeowners still keep a set in the garage. But a brace is not the same as a rated door. Ratings apply to the whole assembly — panels, track, hinges, rollers and the fasteners into the jamb — and adding hardware a manufacturer never tested can void the approval on a door that had one.
A wind-rated door costs more than an unrated one — heavier gauge steel, reinforcing struts, and more fasteners into the jamb. Most of the rated doors we install are also insulated, because the same sandwich construction that stiffens a panel against wind is what carries the R-value. The installation matters as much as the door: the rating only holds if it goes in exactly the way the manufacturer tested it, which is what the inspector is checking.
Florida insurers commonly use a wind mitigation inspection to set premiums, and protection of openings is one of the categories inspectors look at. Whether a rated garage door moves your premium depends on your carrier, your policy and the rest of the house, so ask them directly before you budget around a discount. What we can do is hand you the product approval numbers and the permit paperwork your inspector will ask for.
Open the door and look at the inside face of the panels for a permanent label. Then look at the track and the strut across the back: rated doors normally carry one or more horizontal reinforcing struts and noticeably more jamb fasteners than a builder-grade door. If you are unsure, we will check it during any service call and tell you plainly — there is no charge for looking.
