Tampa Bay does not have a cold problem; it has a heat-and-humidity problem that runs most of the year. An uninsulated garage on an August afternoon sits well above the outdoor temperature, and everything on the other side of that wall — a bedroom, an office, the air handler — pays for it. Whether an insulated door earns its keep depends almost entirely on how your garage is built.
A detached garage used strictly for parking gets far less benefit. You'll notice the door is quieter and sturdier — insulated doors have a stiffer sandwich construction — but the energy argument mostly disappears when there's no conditioned space on the other side.
Manufacturers quote R-values from about R-6 for a thin polystyrene panel to R-18 or higher for polyurethane-injected doors. Two things to know: the number describes the panel, not the whole assembly, and the perimeter and bottom seal matter as much as the panel does. In this climate the seal does double duty — it keeps humidity, and the insects that follow it, out of the garage. A well-sealed R-12 door outperforms a poorly sealed R-18 one.
If you're replacing the door anyway, it has to meet your county's wind-load requirement — and the reinforced, multi-layer construction that carries a wind rating is the same construction that carries the R-value. In practice most rated doors we install in Hillsborough and Pinellas are insulated, so the choice is usually how much insulation rather than whether.
Insulated doors are noticeably quieter. The panel construction damps the rattle and boom a single-skin steel door makes — worth a lot at 6 a.m. under a bedroom. Pair one with a belt-drive opener and the difference is dramatic.
Garage door replacement consistently ranks near the top of remodeling projects for cost recouped at sale. In neighborhoods where curb appeal does real work — Hyde Park, Old Northeast, Lakewood Ranch — a new insulated door is one of the cheapest exterior upgrades available.
